Lynchburg newspaper names new publisher
The News & Advance newspaper in Lynchburg is getting a new publisher.
Veteran newspaper executive Kelly Mirt has been named publisher, effective June 1.
He replaces Robert E. MacPherson, who is retiring after a 34-year career in the newspaper business.
Mirt arrived in Lynchburg on Monday and will work with MacPherson and the newspaper’s staff on the transition until June 1.
MacPherson had been publisher since May 2017. He was a longtime executive with the former Richmond-based Media General Inc., and worked in roles including president of its Virginia community newspapers, publisher of the Danville Register & Bee and a corporate vice president for human resources.
He joined BH Media Group in July 2014. The News & Advance, like the Richmond Times-Dispatch, is owned by BH Media Group.
Mirt began his career 36 years ago in the advertising department at The Wichita (Kansas) Eagle and continued in leadership roles at some of the nation’s leading dailies, including The Denver Post, Dallas Morning News, The Tampa Tribune and The Charlotte Observer. He was most recently president and publisher of the Wichita Eagle.
