POSTCARDS FROM DAYTONA
Dennis Bickmeier, Richmond Raceway president, is attending Speedweeks at Daytona Beach, Fla. He will be sending a daily postcard to bring readers of the Richmond Times-Dispatch behind the scenes.
Could you hear the roar of the engines all the way from Florida last weekend? As haulers arrived last week and race cars made their first laps around Daytona International Speedway, it signaled the start of the new NASCAR season.
The green flag has been waved for the beginning of Daytona Speedweeks leading up to The Great American Race, the Daytona 500, next Sunday.
On Sunday, the Richmond Raceway road trip started as members of our team loaded up an RV and Toyota Tundra with a trailer holding our state-of-the-art, in-car driving simulator for the trip south to Daytona, Fla. As part of the trip, Richmond Raceway’s team will support the start of the racing season by visiting short tracks across five states. With the beginning of the third year of Racing Virginia, an unprecedented collaboration among Virginia’s auto racing venues, it provided a great opportunity to visit short tracks on our road trip. You can learn more about Racing Virginia at racingvirginia.com.
The tour began with a stop at historic Larry King Law’s Langley Speedway in Langley, which opened for auto racing in 1950. The road trip trucked south with visits to Southern National Motorsports Park in Lucama, N.C., and Myrtle Beach Speedway in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
With each stop, we were honoring Richmond Raceway’s mission to support grassroots racing in motor sports.
The road trip will continue with visits to Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Pooler, Ga., New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and conclude at our International Speedway Corporation sister track, Daytona International Speedway. The Richmond Raceway RV will be located in the heart of the action with fans in the GEICO Grounds Red Premium RV Camping throughout Daytona Speedweeks.
Over the next week, I’ll be sharing my personal Daytona diary to bring you to the track for the start of the NASCAR season. Although the Richmond Raceway road trip started Sunday, my trip to Daytona begins Monday. I look forward to sharing our experiences as we prepare for the return of NASCAR’s best to Richmond on April 12-13 for the Toyota spring race weekend. Get your tickets at richmondraceway.com.
