The statement will follow a two-day meeting of the central bank’s policymakers. When Fed officials last met, they decided to keep the central bank’s benchmark interest rate near zero for the foreseeable future. The Fed also pledged to use its “full range of tools” to continue supporting the U.S. economy through the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. Economists anticipate that new data will show U.S. consumer prices edged higher over the 12 months ended in May. The Labor Department’s consumer price index, due out today, is projected to have increased 0.3% last month from a year earlier. That would match the increase in April, the smallest year-overyear gain since 2015. The economic paralysis caused by the coronavirus led to a 0.8% month-to-month decline in consumer prices for April, the steepest monthly decline since the 2008 financial crisis. Uncle Sam has been increasingly spending more money this year than he’s taking in. In April, the federal government’s receipts and outlays translated into a deficit of $737.9 billion for the month. Economists expect the Treasury Department will report today that receipts and outlays in May led to a smaller shortfall of $680 billion. In May last year, the government ended the month with a shortfall of $207.8 billion. seasonally adjusted percent change not seasonally adjusted in billions est. -680 2.5 2.5% -33 -235 -119 -13 -738 The tamer the competition, the better it is for the competitors,” Gordon said. The remaining players in the industry will still have to compete against industry heavyweights like Fidelity and Vanguard and newer investing apps like robinhood.com. And Schwab will be able to lower its cost per trade when it adds TD Ameritrade’s clients. “It’s my belief that there’s enough players out there for competition,” University of Notre Dame professor Robert Battalio said. Another round of consolidation is underway among online brokerages after shareholders and the Justice Department approved Charles Schwab’s acquisition of TD Ameritrade last week. And with Morgan Stanley poised to swallow up rival E-Trade, there will soon be fewer options for investors to trade with. University of Michigan professor Erik Gordon said that loss of competitors in the industry could be bad for consumers and investment advisers because soon there will be fewer companies vying for their business.
