Eye on unemployment Unappetizing NKE Initial jobless benefit claims $100.08 Wall Street expects that Nike closed out its fiscal year on a downbeat note. Analysts predict the athletic apparel and footwear company will report today that its March-May earnings and revenue declined from a year earlier. Nike has made an aggressive shift to online sales, which helped drive its earnings in the December-February quarter. The company has acknowledged that the shutdown of stores due to the pandemic hurt its wholesale business. Many Americans are still losing their jobs even as the economy appears to slowly recover, with more businesses partially reopening. About 1.5 million people applied for jobless aid two weeks ago. That marked the 11th straight decline in applications for jobless aid since a peak of nearly 7 million in March. Economists expect the Labor Department will report today that applications for jobless aid climbed another 1.3 million last week. The owner of the Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse chains serves up its fiscal fourth-quarter results today. Analysts predict Darden Restaurants slid to a loss in the March-May quarter, a lackluster finish to its fiscal year after three straight quarters of earnings growth. Restaurant chains have been hit hard by restrictions imposed on businesses due to the coronavirus. $120 seasonally adjusted in millions 2.45 $84.50 2.5 100 2.12 1.90 2.0 80 ’20 1.57 1.51 est. 1.33 Had it fixed that mistake, 4.9 million more people would have been rightfully classified as unemployed. Roughly 6.6 million additional people who have lost jobs haven’t sought new ones, either because they saw few opportunities or were caring for children or had health concerns. These people, too, weren’t classified as unemployed in May. Adding those two categories would have raised May’s unemployment rate to 19.7%. At least that was below what the rate would have been in April: 23.5%. The coronavirus has made it harder to calculate the most widely known economic measure: The unemployment rate. The official rate was 13.3% in May and 14.7% in April, the highest levels since the Great Depression. Yet those figures don’t capture the full picture. Many people who saw their layoffs as temporary told government survey-takers that they still had jobs, probably because their employers had said they’d recall them to work once government shutdown orders ended. But under the government’s own definition, these people should have been classified as unemployed.
