pandemic has transformed American consumers’ spending habits in ways that may point to where the economy will go from here. Spending on both in-person services — from haircuts to health care to yoga classes — plunged at the onset of the pandemic recession. So did purchases of cars, appliances and other long-lasting goods. But spending on goods has quickly rebounded and is now above pre-pandemic levels. By contrast, spending on services, which makes up 45% of the economy, is recovering more slowly. Many Americans, particularly people working from home, have cut back on dining, shopping, traveling and attending events. Instead, they’re buying cars, appliances and electronic gear. Home offices have been upgraded. Online schooling has required more laptops. Yet even as governmentmandated shutdowns have eased, the rebound in services spending is actually slowing. This stands to slow hiring at restaurants, bars, hotels and gyms. And economists worry that the jump in durable goods spending can’t go on forever. There are only so many cars to buy. Spending on services will have to fully rebound for the economy to recover. Consumption compared, since September 2018 50% Services slowdown? Durable goods spending Durable goods have rebounded, but spending on services is still lagging. 0 Services spending -50 ’18 ’19 ’20 Source: U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis Christopher Rugaber; J.
