Great storm in 1950 brought bitter cold


The Great Appalachia­n Storm of 1950 hit just after Thanksgivi­ng, but its cold air was extreme even by winter standards. On Nov. 25, Burke’s Garden tied Virginia’s monthly record low of 3 below zero. Wytheville fell to 2 degrees and Richmond got as low as 16.
