Previous and change figures reflect current contract. +6.56 (+.2%) Eye on unemployment The Labor Department issues its weekly unemployment claims data today. Economists project that 776,500 more people applied for unemployment aid last week. That would be slightly less than the previous week. Before the pandemic, weekly jobless claims typically only ran about 225,000. Layoffs remain historically high, with many businesses unable to fully reopen and some, especially restaurants and bars, facing tightened restrictions. +.02 Initial jobless benefit claims seasonally adjusted 800 thousand 758 750 700 +59.87 (+.2%) Pandemic dividend The coronavirus pandemic has powered strong sales growth for supermarket operators like Kroger. The Cincinnati company, whose grocery chains include Food 4 Less and Ralphs, has posted solid earnings growth through the first half of its current fiscal year. Many Americans have scaled back on takeout and are spending more during their trips to the supermarket. Kroger serves up its fiscal third-quarter results today. 778 757 748 711 10/23 10/30 11/ 6 11/13 11/20 11/27 Week ending Source: FactSet Not a good look Wall Street expects another downbeat quarterly snapshot from Ulta Beauty. Analysts predict the nation’s largest cosmetics chain will report today that its earnings and revenue declined in the August-October quarter from a year earlier. That would echo the company’s results in the previous quarter. Last month, Ulta said it reached a deal to place shops in more than 100 Target stores by mid-2021 in a bid to broaden its customer base. The benchmark index rose 0.2% after drifting much of the day be- tween small gains and losses. A pullback by technology stocks, companies that rely on consumer spending and others kept the market’s gain in check. Treasury yields continued to head mostly higher.
