Ridgway Public Library eager to expand backyard area

RIDGWAY- The Ridgway Public Library is in the process of expanding their backyard where the conservatory lies, and excavations are currently underway.

Rachel Keller, director of the library, shared what she envisions what the space will look like in the future.

“The whole aesthetic is to go with an English garden theme and in the future we hope to collaborate with local master gardeners,” Keller said.

She continued by saying that the library is currently working with the Rotary Club to carve out ideas to have memorial trees in the space in memory of former Ridgway Mayor, Dr. Guillermo Udarbe.

This area will be a space for all community members to enjoy, and Keller said she will be open to individuals having their own plot in the community garden that will be located in the library’s backyard.

“We’re still working on the finer details on how to do that but it’ll most likely start next spring,” Keller said.

Other ideas which may be considered include, bringing in local gardeners and farmers for presentations on how to garden, and also to host authors and other guest speakers of interest.

Additionally, benches and patio space will be available for seating for book clubs or just to enjoy the outdoors during the spring and summer months. Lighting is going to be added to the area.

Overall, Keller sees the backyard area of the library eventually turning out to be something for everyone to appreciate.

“It’s transformative on how we want to see the library adapt for future use,” Keller said. “We want to make the space a community-centered area.”
