KERSEY - Recently, the Kersey Knights of Columbus (K of C) awarded Caleb Mattuiz with a $500 scholarship.

A recent graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Mattuiz met all the requirements for the scholarship based on his volunteer work with St. Boniface Church where he serves as altar server.

“I want to keep my religion and help with the church in any way that I can. Working hard was the way that I did that,” Mattuiz said.

Kersey Knights of Columbus has given the scholarship each year for the past six years as a way of giving back to the youth that volunteer for church duties and meet the requirements of the scholarship application.

One of the requirements is that the applicant is a member of the St. Boniface Church congregation. The applicant will also have to participate in either church activities or the K of C functions. This can be as an altar server, or a helper in any of the K of C fish fries, dinners, or other events. The last major requirement is that the applicant must be a senior in high school with plans to go to either college or a trade school after they graduate.

Mattuiz plans to attend Pennsylvania State University to study landscaping. He plans to spend his first two years at Penn State in DuBois and then the last two years at the main campus in State College.

Gerry Cheatle, who is on the K of C scholarship committee, added that Caleb put in a lot of effort for the church.

“Of the people that apply, we try to pick the person that has put in the most effort and meets our requirements the best,” Cheatle said.
