Shuey feels team is gaining traction
Despite Tuesday's 3-1 loss at home to Elk County Catholic, Ramettes head coach Matt Shuey feels his 3-1 team is beginning to gain momentum.
"I think we've been playing a bit sluggish, but I'm very pleased with their performance," the coach said following the match. "Even though we didn't get a win, we played up to a higher caliber than we have. Now, I want to see the ball keep rolling."
ECC won the first set 25-18 and the second 2522. Johnsonburg took the third 27-25 before dropping the fourth, 26-24.
The loss came three days after the Lady Crusaders topped the Paper City girls 2-0 to win the championship of the Elk County Tournament. ECC also beat the Ramettes to capture the season-opening A-C Valley Tournament. Last year, the Elk Catholic girls handed J-Burg its only two regular-season losses.
The teams will meet again on Oct. 6 in St. Marys.
No matter the outcome against ECC, Shuey feels his team gains from the matches.
"As a team, we get so much better playing them. ECC is a highcaliber team, and I love playing them. ECC makes us better, and I hope we do the same."
Seniors Julia Jones, Abby King, Ella Lindberg, Alaina Sherry, Annasophia Stauffer, junior Maria Casilio, and sophomore Marlee Cherry saw action against ECC. The team is dealing with the loss of junior starter Kiera Marciniak who was injured during a win at Port Allegany.
The Paper City coach wants to see his team continue to gel as it looks to rebound from Tuesday's loss at DuBois Central Catholic tonight.
"I think we're starting to hit our stride, and if we continue this the whole year, we'll be mentally and physically prepared for the playoffs."
Lady Elkers
The 1-1 Ridgway girls are in Kane tonight. The Lady Elkers opened the season by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Sheffield on Sept. 1. On Tuesday, they were beaten 3-0 at DuBois (25-11, 25-17, 25-10).
The Lady Wolves are 3-0 and are coming off Tuesday's 3-0 home win over Sheffield. The Kane girls opened the season with a 3-1 win over Bradford and a 3-0 victory over DuBois Central Catholic at home.
