Candidate night held by Elk County Election Office

- By Brian D. Stockman Staff Writer

RIDGWAY--Though this year's elections are primarily for local offices, there were still about 30 candidates that turned out for candidate night held by the Elk County Election Office.

The process of running for public office, from Borough Council members to a coroner to even school board members, requires that candidates fill out a large variety of forms that Election Director Kimberly Frey guided those present through during the meeting.

The meeting was the first time candidates could pick up their packets and petitions to run for an elected office. For county-wide elections, candidates require 100 signatures from their fellow party members. For positions like school board members, they only require ten signatures. There are also specific deadlines, paperwork for financial disclosure, and an ethical declaration if currently a government employee.

Candidates can begin circulating their petitions on Valentine's Day, February 14, through March 7, when they must be turned in to the Election office.

Other important dates include:

The first day to circulate and file nomination petitions is February 14.

The last day to circulate and file a nomination petition is March 7.

The last day to file objections to nomination petitions is March 14.

The day for the casting of the lots (A dice throw) for Primary ballot positions is March 14 at 11 a.m. at the Courthouse Annex Building in Conference Room #2.

The last day for candidates filing nomination petitions to withdraw is March 22.

The last day to register to vote before the Primary is May 1.

The Municipal Primary is on May 16. The Municipal Election is on November 7.

Any potential candidate who was unable to attend the Informational Election Night can stop by and pick up a packet at the Elk County Election Offices, located at 300 Center Street, during regular business hours from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Any questions should also be addressed with Elk County Election Director Kimberly Frey or Deputy Director Sue Milliard during those hours as well.
