Lady Crusaders go up big early, cruise to win over Brookville

An 18-1 advantage by ECC in the first quarter set the tone for Wednesday night’s matchup between the Lady Crusaders and Brookville Lady Raiders. Elk Catholic scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back, cruising to a 4722 home win.

Tori Newton led ECC in scoring with 12 points and Lucy Klawuhn was one back with 11.

Reggan Olson led Brookville with six points.

Emily Mourer opened the scoring with a bucket for ECC 16 seconds into the game, and the Lady Crusaders were off and running from there. Newton made the next bucket, and then Mourer scored again, with Brookville calling a timeout after the Lady Crusaders went up 6-0.

A bucket by Sami Straub, another pair of twos by Newton, and a pair of twos by Klawuhn put ECC up 16-0 with 2:11 still to play in the quarter.

Brookville scored their lone point of the frame with 1:52 on the clock as Izzy Pangallo went on-for-two from the foul line.

Another bucket by Straub with 14 seconds to go left the Lady Crusaders leading 18-1 at the end of the first eight minutes of play.

The second quarter saw ECC use an 11-5 advantage to take a 29-6 halftime lead.

Klawuhn hit a three for ECC in the frame, Straub, Mourer, and Kiri Emmert each made a bucket, and Sydney Alexander and Payton Newton each went one-for-two from the foul line. Olson hit a three for Brookville and Samantha Whitling made a field goal.

The Lady Crusaders kicked in a running clock in the third quarter as they outscored Brookville 16-8 to take a 31-point lead, 45-14.

Newton and Alexander each had four points for ECC in the frame on a pair of twos, Klawuhn hit another three and went one-for-two from the foul line, and Straub and Sarah Hasselman each made a bucket. Olson and Mara Bowser each made a three for the Lady Raiders, and Bentley Hughey went two-for-two from the line.

In the final quarter, Brookville outscored ECC 8-2 to make the final score 47-22 in favor of the Lady Crusaders.

Eden Wonderling made a three for Brookville, Kerstyn Davie and Kaida Yoder each made a field goal, and Whitling was onefor-two from the foul line. Newton had the lone bucket of the quarter for ECC.

The Lady Crusaders return to action on Saturday when they travel across town to St. Marys Area High School to take on the Lady Dutch. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.

ECC JV team wins

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader junior varsity team defeated Brookville by a score of 34-27 in the preliminar­y contest.

ECC outscored Brookville 13-5 in the first quarter and 8-4 in the second to take a 21-9 halftime lead. Brookville used an 11-4 advantage in the third quarter to cut ECC’s lead to 2520. The Lady Crusaders then outscored the Lady Raiders 9-7 in the fourth quarter for the 34-27 win.
