Read Across America event to be held on March 2
RIDGWAY- Last year, Big Maple Farm’s Natural Therapies started their Books in the Barn program, which gives an opportunity for children to read with animals at the farm. Reading with animals has proven to have several benefits related to selfesteem, confidence, as well as the ability to enhance literacy skills.
According to early childhood educator Jodie Rodriguez, reading to pets or farm animals provide youth with a non-judgmental audience for reading aloud while providing feedback.
Rodriguez also went on to say that creating an atmosphere where the child can bond with the animal or read any book that they picked out will make the child want to return and read more, as well discovering the ability to read for a purpose through this experience.
Non-verbal interactions such as these allow young children to enjoy their experience with reading more. This also changes the atmosphere for reading rather than being intimidated by it in a school setting, which could be the case for some young readers.
To get an early start on the Books in the Barn program, Big Maple Farm’s Natural Therapies decided to host a Read Across America Day on March 2.
This day is celebrated nationally to celebrate the famous author Dr. Suess on his birthday and encourages the youth to read across the country.
Young readers who come out to the Big Maple Farm with their families to read to the mini horses and donkeys will go home with a free book and treat bag and enjoy birthday cake during the event.
This event will go on from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Big Maple Farm is located on 877 Long Level Road in Ridgway. For additional questions or information about the event, contact Amanda Balon at (814) 335-0804.
