Adopt an Educator helps teachers earn ACT 48 hours
Adopt an Educator is an Educator in the Workplace program for Cameron and Elk County Educators. This program is offered through the Community Education Center of Elk and Cameron Counties DISCOVER Partnership in conjunction with Program Manager Amy Goode. Teachers can earn ACT 48 hours by visiting a local business and working with a local manufacturing host to create a lesson for the classroom. The program goals for the educators are for them to experience a hands-on look at how academic content is applied to workplaces in their communities. The company’s goals are to learn about the realities, challenges, and opportunities in the world of local education. The students’ goals are to make authentic connections between the academics they learn today for careers in their local communities tomorrow.
Recently Beth Horning, a 5th grade teacher at FSG Elementary School visited Rich Bon at Alpha Precision Group in Ridgway. Mr. Bon took Mrs. Horning on a tour of the facility providing an educational overview of the factory comparing how manufacturing has grown and developed over the years. During the visit Mrs. Horning learned about the process of powdered medal and the important academics needed in order to do the many different jobs required to make the facility function. Mr. Bon then presented a lesson on manufacturing to the 5th grade students at FSG Elementary School. Students enjoyed interacting with pressed and unpressed parts that were made at APG.
They also participated in activities to learn how to figure out the density of products made and how to calculate the percentages needed on a daily basis. Students were introduced to the many diverse jobs available at APG. A very lively question and answer period followed with many thought provoking questions asked and answered.
