-

PITTSBURGH – Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today released the 10 most popular baby names chosen by parents delivering their newborns across the network's labor and delivery programs (L&D) in 2023. Topping the charts last year were Noah and Charlotte for the top boy and girl names, followed closely by Owen and Olivia for third and fourth place.

The Top 10 Names Selected at AHN in 2023: 1. Noah; 2. Charlotte; 3. Owen; 4. Olivia; 5. Henry; 6. Luca; 7. James; 8. Jack; 9. Oliver; 10. Theodore.

• Making the cut: Henry, Luca and James made the 2023 Top 10 list after missing out in 2022.

• Just missing the cut:

Among the popular names falling just outside the top 10 last year were Evelyn and Sophia for girls, and Miles and Levi for boys.

• Big jumps: Charlotte rose from No. 4 on the charts in 2022 to No. 2 in 2023, and Noah leaped from No. 13 in 2022 to the top spot in 2023.

• Big drops: Olivia dropped to the fourth spot after being the top-selected name in 2022, while Theodore dropped eight spots from No. 2 to No. 10.

• Off the list: Names that dropped from the 2022 Top 10 list included Amelia, Logan and Emma.

• Unique names: Of the 3,200 different baby names chosen by parents delivering last year at AHN facilities, a whopping 2,100+ were original to the network – only used one time.

Across the country in 2023, Liam, Noah and Oliver were the top boy names while Olivia, Emma and Amelia were front-runners for baby girls. Names that were local favorites, but did not make the national Top 10 list, were Owen, Luca and Jack.

“Across western Pennsylvania, our award-winning labor and delivery teams welcomed more than 8,500 babies into the world last year,” said Marcia Klein-Patel, MD, PhD and Chair, AHN Women's Institute. “It's a privilege to provide comprehensive, obstetric care to these thousands of birthing patients, and to work closely with their families to help ensure our babies have a healthy, prosperous entrance into the world, best positioning them to thrive through their childhood and beyond.”

The AHN Women's Institute provides L&D services at the network's West Penn, Forbes, Wexford, Jefferson, and Saint Vincent (Erie, Pa.) hospitals. Throughout the region, AHN's physicians, advanced practice providers and nurses work with birthing people from conception through the fourth trimester to provide comprehensive care that works to meet the family's health goals and provide the best possible outcomes for both patient and baby.

The AHN Women's Institute also works closely with teams from behavioral health, social services, neonatology and pediatrics to design tailored care plans for areas of focus such as postpartum depression and anxiety, as well as specialized infant care.

AHN Forbes, Wexford and Jefferson offer level II neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for non-critically ill infants, while AHN Saint Vincent and West Penn hospitals can care for critically ill babies in their advanced level III NICUs.

All AHN L&D teams also work closely with pediatricians from the AHN Pediatric Institute to help ensure babies are best positioned to thrive from infancy and beyond. At the AHN postpartum suites, pediatricians consistently round on families to perform routine wellness visits which may include hearing screenings, blood sugar monitoring, lactation consultations, vaccination consultations, and safe sleep checks.

Last year, AHN West Penn was named Pittsburgh's top hospital for women's care for the second consecutive time, and one of the top 30 hospitals in the country, by U.S. News & World Report's “Best Hospitals” rankings. In Erie, AHN Saint Vincent was also recognized by U.S. News as its region's best hospital for maternity care.
