Bulldogs last D9 survivor

Class 2A champion Redbank Valley is the only left of the 19 District 9 teams that entered the PIAA basketball championsh­ip tournament last week.

On Wednesday, the Bulldogs were 51-21 winners over District thirdplace West Shamokin (21-7) to secure a spot in Saturday's quarterfin­al against WPIAL champ Aliquippa (23-5).

Girls

The district Class A champion Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders were eliminated in Wednesday's second round by D6 runner-up Williamsbu­rg (26-3) 5430 at West Branch High School. Third-place DuBois Central Catholic (15-12) was ousted by D6 winner Bishop Guilfoyle (26-3) 47-21. The other district Class A participan­t's runner-up, Ridgway (20-7), fourth-place Clarion (14-13), and fifth-place Port Allegany (19-8) were beaten in the first round.

The season for district 4A champion St. Marys came to an end at Keystone High School on Wednesday, where the Lady Dutch (21-6) lost 63-33 to D7 runner-up Blackhawk (24-3).

Boys

On Tuesday, the single-A winning ECC Crusaders (25-3) were beaten by WPIAL thirdplace Union (17-11) 6442 at PennWest Clarion. The contest followed D9 third-place Cameron County's (23-6) 69-56 loss to D10 champ Farrell (21-5). Runner-up Clarion (18-10) was beaten by defending state champ and WPIAL winner 7-1 Imani Christian (16-10) in the second round on Tuesday. The district's other Class A advancers, fourth-place Johnsonbur­g (19-9) and fifth-place Union (13-12), lost in the first round.

Double A boy's runners-up Karn City (208) and third place OttoEldred (25-3), 3A champ Moniteau (13-12), and 4A winner Punxsutawn­ey (14-11) were beaten in the first round.
