PA sweeps Senior hoop Classic
PORTVILLE - Pennsylvania teams led from start to finish while sweeping Sunday's Big 30 Senior Classic basketball games at Central High School.
The Keystone State girls broke a six-game New York win streak with an 84-66 victory. The PA boys set the tone early, led 74-36 at halftime, and continued their dominance, winning 135-71, tying the series 4-4.
Girls
Jayssa Snelick from St. Marys and Smethport's Elizabeth Hungiville scored 15 points for the winners. Elk County Catholic's Syd Alexander tallied 13 points, and Ridgway's Jenna Kasmierski, who hit three treys, 11. Snelick also hit three from behind the arc. Sami Straub from the Lady Crusaders also hit a three and finished with nine points. Alexander had a threepointer as well.
ECC's Lucy Klawuhn and Kane's Maya Smith scored two points. Others hitting the Pennsylvania score sheet were Warren's Halle Kuzminski (6 pts.), Sammie Ruhman (2 pts.), and Port Allegany's Kayleigha Dowell (2 pts.). Alexa Schneider of the Lady Dutch filled the spot of her Lady Dutch teammate Maura Caskey and received one of the scholarships awarded by the Big 30 Committee.
Portville Central's Lilly Bentley led New York with 17 points.
Boys
PA jumped out to a 13-0 lead and had seven players scoring in double digits, including Johnsonburg's Isaiah Jackson (15 points), ECC's Jordan Wasko (19 points), and Colby Nussbaum (15 points). Warren's Brady Berdine led the way with 27 points, and Otto-Eldred's Braxton Caldwell added 22.
Quin Gavazzi from St. Marys hit three of the team's 13 treys and finished with nine points. Ridgway's Alex Merritt nailed a three and had seven points. Wasko scored 15 points from behind the arc, and Cameron County's Josh Smith, who scored 10, hit two threes. Warren's Tommy Nyquist also played.
New York was led by Zach Sisson from Bolivar-Richburg, who scored 27 points.
