Deputy Wounded, Suspect Shot In Riverbank Incident
One deputy was injured and a suspect shot during an altercation that occurred last week in Riverbank. The suspect later died at a Modesto hospital.
Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to the City of Riverbank were called to the scene of a dispute in the 7000 block of Burneyville Road, off of Riverside Drive, on May 29. The call came in about 10:45 a.m., according to authorities. Deputies responded to a 911 call regarding an ex-tenant returning to a property he had been evicted from over a month ago. The property owner had confronted the suspect, identified by police as 51-year old Armando Osuna, but Osuna had reportedly refused to leave.
Two deputies responded to the call and made contact with Osuna, who was still on the property of the residence. During the contact with deputies, Osuna became combative and struck one of the deputies with a metal pipe. One of the deputies then fired at Osuna, striking him in the upper torso. Deputies were able to detain the suspect in handcuffs and request medical assistance.
Osuna was transported to a Modesto hospital for medical care, but succumbed to his injuries several hours later. The deputy who was struck with the pipe was also transported to the hospital. He was treated and released.
Authorities said, as per protocol, three separate and independent investigations have been launched into this officer-involved shooting. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is conducting both a criminal and administrative investigation and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the incident.
