The Great Escape,
1962 Triumph T6R With six inches of padding on the seat and off-road racer Bud Ekins standing in for Steve Mcqueen, the Triumph took to the air, soaring 65 feet over a barbed-wire fence. True, it was made up to look like a World War Ii–era BMW, but there was no movie trickery about the stunt itself: The bike really did make the jump. The Nazis eventually recaptured Mcqueen’s character, but his Triumph went the distance.
