Toyota Century chamfering

- —BRENDAN MCALEER

A vehicle fit for the Japanese imperial household requires obsessive focus on detail. Before the body panels of Toyota’s Century limousine are prepared for paint, highly skilled craftsmen smooth down the car’s signature character line by hand. This chamfering process, called kichomen, dates to woodworking methods from eighthcentury Japan. Perfection requires a high degree of concentration and even breath control.
