SHOW & TELL SPOTLIGHT

-

Do you recall those days of youth when you’d make plans to bring one special thing to school to share with your classmates during Show & Tell? Since we believe no one is ever too old to share stories, and photos about special treasures, we host Show & Tell every week via our social media feeds. Now we’re sharing some of that in the pages of the magazine.

1. JOHN CHAPMAN

Picture jasper cabochon, which I cut and polished and then wrapped in sterling silver. It looks like the “Hills of Home.”

2. MARY ANN DEBOEVER

Every Show and Tell day I brought rocks to school. So much so, I was told “no more repeats.” This is a little treasure. It probably has no gemstone value, but I thought it was worth sharing the story behind it. As bored as people were with my enthusiasm for the hobby, my dad gave me this nugget of chert. He found it doing something he loves to do, ‘puttzing’ around the yard. Seems he remembers I have a thing for chert.

3. TYLER HUBERT

These are datolite nodules from Michigan.

4. JOANN HANSON

I’ve had this little cow skull for years and didn’t know what to do with it. Then, I got inspired.

5. GRANT JONES

Feather Ridge Plume agate cabochon with basanite.

6. CHRIS COOLEY

An agate slice found in West Texas.

7. STEPHEN PETKOVSEK

Fresh o… the saw. Electric blue obsidian slabs.

8. HEATHER GUNTER

I’m very proud of my “rough” display.

9. AMY JONES

Grape agate.

10. ROBERT MCINTIRE JR.

My wife and I worked on cutting and polishing slag from the Rebecca Iron Ore furnace, and wire wrapping the stone in sterling silver.

11. ERIKA ANDERSON

One of my favorite thundereggs, found and cut in central Oregon.

12. DAVID ST. JOHN

Rock talk for firstgrade class.

13. PAUL ROSSMAN

I’ve always been attracted to Egyptian jewelry pieces ever since I saw the King Tut exhibit in San Francisco in 1979. This is an Egyptianinspired pendant made of turquoise, malachite, lapis intarsia, sterling silver, and brass

14. RON GRIESE

Mountain White Colorado. Aquamarine on feldspar with smoky quartz and mica. .

15. KYLE BECKMAN

Oregon sunstones

16. MIKE JAMES

I recently discovered that these are not only septaria, but also pyritized fish coprolite! I have a few which are similar to those found in Scotland. Although, from the ones I have sliced, only this one has an open cavity and well-formed “veins” of pyrite. The ones I have found are from Illinois.
