Arkansas – Permitted in Crater of Diamonds State Park only California – Rockhoundi­ng permitted with limitation­s on the amount and use and in certain areas Connecticu­t – Prohibited with limited permits issued at certain sites for public educationa­l mineral collecting Idaho – Prohibited from digging, destroying or removing, except for with a permit for scientific or educationa­l purposes Michigan – Permitted to remove up to 25 pounds per year of any rock or mineral, excluding gold-bearing materials, for personal, non-commercial hobby use New Mexico – Permitted in designated areas and Rockhound State Park for personal use North Carolina – Prohibited except with a collection permit issued for scientific or educationa­l purposes Ohio – Permitted with a Collecting Permit, is issued for specific purposes Tennessee – Permitted to coltlect small amounts of small rocks by hand for personal use Vermont – Permits the personal collection of small stones for educationa­l purposes or hobby collecting without a permit Virginia – Prohibited to take or gather in any manner except with a special permit for scientific collecting
