Lucette celebrates 10 years

Salon hosting block party to celebrate anniversary

- Jim Hagerty

Kate Wirth was suddenly out of job in December 2013, when 5-Spa, the downtown Rockford salon where she worked closed.

“I wasn’t sure what my next move should be, whether I should go work at another salon in town,” Wirth said.

So, she then made a move. Sort of. With bankruptcy proceedings in the works involving her former employer, Wirth decided to turn the former 5-Spa space at 508 E. State St. into Lucette Holistic Salon and Boutique. She opened on March 4, 2014. Four months later, she bought the building.

“I just couldn’t see myself working for someone else again,” Wirth said. “I decided to give it my best shot and try something new in the same space.”

Taking a chance, Wirth not only kept her livelihood going, she prevented kept a downtown storefront alive and on the tax rolls.

“We have so many incredible businesses downtown that continue to grow and thrive, including Lucette,” said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara. “Lucette is a strong anchor to Block 5, and I’m thrilled it’s celebrating 10 years of providing incredible service to the residents of our community.”

Lucette provides hair, makeup, skincare, and wellness services to a loyal clientele who continue to spread the word beyond the Rockford region.

“We focus on a more comprehensive service for our clients,” Wirth said. “We want them to feel like they are being educated so they can recreate themselves at home, as well, and have a higher-quality haircut. We are focused on the whole person.”

To celebrate a decade in business, Lucette is hosting a block party on Saturday, March 30. The event will include food trucks, dutch-style braiding, permanent jewelry, yoga and dance instruction, and signature mocktails. There’s also a 3.7-mile walk along the Sinnissippi bike path to raise money and awareness for clean water efforts.

“This anniversary is not just a celebration of our success as a small business,” Wirth said, “but also a tribute to the relationships we’ve built with our clients and the community.”
