The Power of Pelosi

For our Women Shaping the Future issue in March, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi posed alongside three congressional freshmen: Jahana Hayes, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. Each of them spoke about how women are changing politics, challenging Trump, and more. Ryan Knight wrote that this issue gave him hope, adding, “These fierce women are moving America forward, and they are doing it together.” Hillary Clinton also commented, sharing this quote from Hayes: “We are at an intersection in history, and 20 years from now, it’s going to be the millennials and the students and the women and the single moms and the outliers who came in and restored faith in government.” However, some readers like Steven O’Shea contested, tweeting, “Why would you have such a partisan cover? There are plenty of conservative women that are helping shape the world, too!” Others, like Chris Fernandez, praised Speaker Pelosi: “She elevated these newly elected powerhouse women to committees so their voices could be heard. I’d say she’s a rock star!” Pelosi captured the ethos of the issue by tweeting that this cover of Rolling Stone is “worth millions of dreams to women and girls across America. To them we say: Know your power. Know your worth. Have a plan. And be ready.”
