469 469 Car Wheels on a Gravel Road LUCINDA WILLIAMS

When I was about 14, a friend made me and my twin sister, Alison, these mix CDs of different cool women that he liked. PJ Harvey was on there, and Fiona Apple, and the Pretenders. “Joy,” from Car Wheels on a Gravel

Road, was on my sister’s, and we swapped back and forth. I like when you can follow an artist through different records, and then it all kind of culminates into one. With Car

Wheels, it’s like she’s been crafting this voice over the course of several amazing records, and then this one happens. I think “Drunken Angel” is really perfect. If I was gonna pick a song that encapsulates the energy or the essence of every song on the record, that would be it, because it’s melancholy, but it’s really melodic. It includes every vibe.
