An Epic Love Letter to the ‘Black Album’
METALLICA ARE releasing a deluxe edition of their self-titled 1991 watershed LP (a.k.a. the Black Album), and it’s accompanied by something even cooler: a 52-song covers project, in which an incredibly diverse array of artists honor the album. Each song gets several interpretations: “Enter Sandman” is lovably stomped out by indie bro Mac DeMarco, Nordic ghouls Ghost, and metal-pop wild card Rina Sawayana; Miley Cyrus is backed by Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, and others as she belts out “Nothing Else Matters”; and Colombian star J Balvin turns in a slinky “Wherever I May Roam.” The result might be the most inventive tribute LP ever.
