My Dear Melancholy
2018
Far from a between-blockbusters throwaway, 2018’s My Dear Melancholy quietly slipped in after the massive success of 2016’s Starboy with some memorably chill vibes. If this is the Weeknd’s take on dejection, he makes it sound as serene as a calm morning jog. “Try Me” finds him offering up his heart to a would-be lover over soothing synths. And “I Was Never There” is a sedative bop about the voids of mindless sex that, nonetheless, achieves a striking sense of lucidity. Clocking in at a mere seven tracks, the EP is an invigorating quickie that’s here for the long haul.
