Rema’s Smooth Afrorave Sunshine

-

YOU’VE HEARD of Afrobeat, and Afrobeats — now it’s time to get psyched for Afrorave, the enticing genre name that rising Nigerian star Rema has given to the resplendently smooth sound radiating throughout his debut, Rave & Roses. Rema has already done big streaming numbers for songs like “Dumebi” and the hypnotic “Soundgasm,” which is on the LP. On Rave & Roses, his gracious high register splashes over tracks like “Runaway,” a lush lover’s plea. But there are moodier moments, too, like “Addicted,” with its brooding Eighties synths. The mix of sunshine and a little shade makes for a great listen. JON DOLAN
