Train crushes stolen Chevy truck in Lindale

- Doug Walker, associate editor

A 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck was totaled Saturday after it was abandoned on railroad tracks between Park Avenue and the Silver Creek Presbyterian Church at about 7: 30 a.m.

According to Floyd County police:

It appeared that three people had been joy riding in a stolen truck and were on a right of way that crossed the creek. Floyd County police officer Rusty Adams said the trio apparently tried to cross the tracks, and the truck’s tires got hung up on one of the rails.

The engineer of the train that struck the truck told police that he saw three people take off from around the truck and head into the woods.

“He was unable to stop in time and struck the truck, knocking it off the tracks,” said Adams. “We think it was a female and two males, but the engineer was concerned about not striking the truck and didn’t get a good description.”

The truck had been reported stolen from the Wax Road area.

Newberry was charged with felony terroristic threats and acts and was being held in the Floyd County Jail on Saturday pending bond arrangements.
