The Georgia School for the Deaf Tigers saw plenty of encouraging signs on Saturday — even if they weren’t reflected on the scoreboard.

Playing their season opener in Cave Spring, the Tigers went toe-to-toe with their rivals from Tennessee for much of the first half before TSD pulled away and posted a 46- 22 victory over the feisty GSD squad.

“All in all, we played pretty well,” said head coach Erik Whitworth. “We asked the kids to leave everything they had on the field, and they did that. Our young men really played well.”

GSD senior Jay Matthew ran for 141 yards on 17 carries before being forced to leave the game with an ankle injury.

Josh McTaggart added 51 yards on 13 attempts and scored a pair of touchdowns for the Tigers.

GSD quarterback Jonathan Petersen threw a 26yard touchdown pass to freshman Carlos Estrada.

Petersen also ran for a two-point conversion.

Jaquari Cotton led the Tigers’ defensive charge, causing four fumbles.

GSD will have next weekend off before visiting Shiloh Hills Christian on Sept. 7.
