Car splits during U.S. 27 wreck
A horrific two car wreck on U. S. 27 near the intersection with Dugger Drive split a car in two and sent three people to hospital on Tuesday morning.
Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol were still investigating the wreck late Tuesday and had not released the names of those involved.
One person was airlifted to a hospital, and two others were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to officials at the scene.
According to Floyd County officer Dale Johnson, the preliminary investigation indicated the driver of a Ford Taurus was traveling south on U.S. 27 when he or she lost control and collided with a pickup truck that was traveling north.
The Taurus broke into two pieces during the wreck, and the separate parts came to rest approximately 30 feet apart.
The front of the Taurus, which included the front seat and hood, landed in a field near the intersection of U.S. 27 and Dugger Drive. The rest of the car was slammed up against trees in the front yard of a nearby home.
The truck sustained significant damage and was located near the front yard where the bottom half of the Taurus was.
It is not known what caused the wreck. Traffic was tied up during that time, with the two northbound lanes where the vehicles collided blocked for a while.
