Kitchen fire sends child to hospital
Fire officials are investigating the exact cause of the blaze.
A 1- year- old boy was treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital Thursday afternoon after a fire started in the kitchen of the townhouse he was in, according to Rome- Floyd Fire Department officials.
According to Battalion Chief Roger Haggard:
Alonzo Dennis said he was cooking on the stove in one of the units of Heritage Square Townhomes, 176 E. 11th St., when he walked away.
“When he came back, there was a blaze, and he grabbed a fire extinguisher to try and put it out,” Haggard said.
The fire continued to blaze, and the three adults inside at the time were forced to evacuate the two-story unit.
The child was carried out by one of the adults. He was conscious and alert when emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene. He was taken to Floyd Medical Center.
Haggard said the fire was contained to the kitchen and did not affect any other unit. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
Dennis’ dog, Mitzi, darted out the front door after firefighters had contained the blaze and were venting the structure to remove the smoke. The dog was recovered by Dennis, and he and a friend used a garden hose to wash off the soot. It appeared to be unharmed. Alonzo Dennis kisses his dog Mitzi, while he and a friend clean away the soot with a garden hose.
