Rape case affects 2 counties
Gilmer and Gordon sheriff’s offices are investigating an alleged incident that may have involved young Calhoun men.
The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an alleged rape incident that might have involved several young Calhoun men, officials there reported Thursday.
Gilmer County officials said no arrests have been made, and the names of any possible suspects are not being released now because it could jeopardize the investigation.
The sheriff’s office probe is focusing on a May 10 party, investigators said.
Around 11: 30 p. m. that night, approximately 25 Calhoun 18- to 20-year-olds and one individual from Dalton attended a party at a cabin in Gilmer County that is owned by one of the party attendees’ parents, the sheriff’s office reported.
The report and statements from witnesses indicate that all, or at least nearly all, of the attendees were drinking alcohol and were intoxicated.
Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson said he hopes to have the investigation finished by next week.
Calhoun City Schools Superintendent Michelle Taylor said she did not have any details about the incident and referred all questions to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office.
“This was not a schoolrelated matter,” Taylor said. “I know the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a situation and that it occurred on private property.”
Taylor said the school system will always cooperate with law enforcement on any investigation that involves students or school activities, but no law enforcement officials had shared any information with her.
The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office in an ongoing investigation, according to Gordon County Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert Paris, but he declined to discuss specifics.
