Play suspended at NCAA championships

- From local reports

The NCAA men’s golf championships was suspended at 4:15 p.m. because of inclement weather. Berry completed 10 holes Thursday and is tied for 10th place (33-over) heading into today’s final day.

The Vikings began teeing off at 8:40 a.m. A drizzle turned into to rain by the time Tommy McCloskey, Berry’s final player, hit his first shot on hole No. 10 of the East Course at 9:20 a.m.

Berry players completed between three and six holes before play was suspended about one hour later. The entire field then endured a four-hour delay. Play resumed at 2:15 p.m. and the Vikings completed between 10 and 13 holes before the inclement weather ended the day. Berry was 16-over for the day.

“The scores were higher for everyone today,” said Berry College head coach Brian Farrer. “A tough course and pin placements— in addition to the soggy conditions — made things difficult for the players.”

McCloskey was 3-over for the day and is tied for 10th with his 2-over overall tally. Bobby Holden of Redlands is 6- under and has a onestroke lead. Schreiner ( 12- over) still leads the team competition. Schreiner has a two-stroke edge on Oglethorpe. Play is slated to resume this morning at 7:30 a.m. with the final round scheduled to start immediately following the completion of the third round.

“The guys really battled today and are looking to close the tournament strong on Friday,” said Farrer.
