School tutoring can be costly but the honors program at Berry College and Greater Christ Temple church can help.

For the past two years, Berry students have volunteered to tutor students ages 7 to 18 at the church, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The free tutoring will start Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. at the church. Dinner will be served at each tutoring session. Registration will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the church.

For more information call Bishop Nealon Guthrie at 706-331-0891 or Louise Wright at 706-237-6565.

Wright, a member of Greater Christ Temple, says each year the turnout gets better.

“A bunch of kids go and they improve their grades,” she said. “All the Berry students that volunteer work closely with the students and get so excited to bring their report cards to show off their good grades.”

Wright said there is a need for affordable tutoring in the community. “Some of the parents of these kids don’t have the means to pay for their kids get the extra push they need in school,” she said. “That’s why I want the community to know that we’re starting the program up for a third year.”

Berry College professor Brian Carroll said the youth receive help in subjects such as science, math, reading, geography, Spanish, English and social studies. Berry student volunteers choose a subject area in which they have some expertise.

Carroll said tutoring is not only beneficial for the youth its beneficial for the Berry students.

“It’s been so exciting to see the kids improve in their work and see that improvement pay off in their grades,” he said. “We’ve seen great improvement in many cases. Beyond their grades, it’s so important that these kids have these Berry students to stand with them, to partner with them and for the Berry students to realize their efforts pay off in the end.”
