Devils’ defense shuts down Phoenix

Long led Sonoravill­e with 81 yards on 14 attempts, while Brandon Dendy gained 67 yards on 15 carries.

Sonoravill­e (0-1) plays host to Rockmart next Friday, while Model (2-0) returns home to play host to Christian Heritage.

Ridgeland 35, Chattooga 7

Class 4A Ridgeland bounced

Nakyle Watkins rushed for three touchdowns, Model’s defense allowed only 10 points, and the Blue Devils topped Sonoravill­e 21-10 Friday night at Sonoravill­e.

Model’s offense racked up 308 yards, including 182 on the ground, while holding the Phoenix to less than 200 yards of offense on the evening.

Watkins opened the scoring for the Blue Devils on a six- yard touchdown run in the opening quarter, giving the Blue Devils a 7- 0 lead after Isaiah Bagwell converted the extra point.

The Phoenix answered late in the second quarter when Cody Long scored on a 17-yard run, tying the game at 7. Sonoravill­e added a field goal late in the first half to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.

Sonoravill­e’s lead held until the fourth quarter.

Watkins scored again, this time on a one- yard run and Rachel McFry converted the extra point giving the Blue Devils a 14-10.

McFry traded her volleyball gear for football gear a night after helping lead the Blue Devils to two wins on the court Thursday.

Watkins and the Blue Devils put the finishing touches on the game late in the fourth quarter, as he scored on a five-yard run. Bagwell converted the extra point, giving Model the 21-10 win.

Watkins led all rushers with 165 yards on 28 carries and the three touchdowns.

He also caught two passes for 51 yards.

Model quarterbac­k Tyler Dean back from a loss to Adairsvill­e last week by topping Chattooga 35- 7 at Chattooga on Friday night.

The Panthers used a strong night from Caderius Word, who rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Word scored the first two touchdowns of the game, and Chris Henderson added the third on a one- yard run in the second quarter, extending Ridgeland’s lead to 21-0.

The Panthers’ Zack Weathers returned a Chattooga intercepti­on 59 yards for a touchdown to give Ridgeland a 28- 0 halftime lead. Chattooga quarterbac­k Isaac Foster got the Indians on the board in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 35-yard run, cutting the lead to 28-7.

Word and the Panthers had the final say though, as the back went 16 yards for the final touchdown of the evening.

Henderson added 50 yards on six carries for the Panthers.

Isaac Foster led the Indians with 86 yards on 12 carries and also completed six passes for 46 yards but tossed two intercepti­ons.

Isaiah Foster rushed for 36 yards on 13 carries.

Ridgeland (1-1) has a week off before they return home on Sept. 12 to play Class AA Dade County.

Chattooga (0-1) travels to play at North Murray next Friday.

Adairsvill­e 45, Woodland 20

The Adairsvill­e Tigers jumped out to an early lead on Bartow County rival Woodland and never looked back grabbing a 45-20 lead at Woodland.

The win moves the Tigers to (2-0) and gives Adairsvill­e backto- back season opening wins over higher classifica­tion programs.

Last week, Adairsvill­e knocked off Class 4A Ridgeland before taking down the Class 5A Wildcats this week.

Adairsvill­e has an off week next week.

The Tigers return to action on Sept. 12 when they open Region 6- AAA play by playing host to 2013 Class 3A Semifinali­st Ringgold.

Woodland ( 0- 1) returns to action next week at home when they take on Forsyth Central.

Paulding County 46,

Pepperell 14

Pepperell ran into a buzz saw also known as Class 5A Paulding County on Friday night as the Dragons dropped their seasonopen­ing game on the road 4614.

The Dragons (0-1) return to action next week when they play host to Class AA Bowdon.
