Canada says he won’t run for re-election
Cave Spring Mayor Rob Ware also will not seek a new term.
Rome City Commissioner Kim Canada announced Thursday he will not seek another term, a move that ensures someone new will serve on the panel after this November’s elections.
Six commission seats are up for election this year. Ward 1 Commissioners Bill Irmscher, Milton Slack III and Buzz Wachsteter, as well as Ward 3 Commissioners Bill Collins and Evie McNiece must run for re-election to keep their seats. Canada’s is the third Ward 3 seat. Ward 2 commissioners aren’t up for election this year.
Qualification for the City Commission is from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. It costs $252 to qualify, which is done at City Hall, 601 Broad St.
Voting in Rome is done by plurality, meaning the top three vote-getters in each ward secure a seat on the commission.
Ward 1 lies between the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers, including downtown and North Rome. Ward 3 is west of the Oostanaula and Coosa rivers, including West Rome and the area around Stonebridge Golf Club.
Canada, a former Floyd County commissioner and three-term Rome City commissioner, praised county and Cave Spring officials, saying no other community works as well to accomplish common goals.
“I wanted to make the announcement now to give anybody a chance to run if they want to,” Canada said. “Ward 3 always seems to generate a lot of interest whenever there’s a vacancy. When Ronnie Wallace stepped down, nine people qualified.”
Cave Spring has three positions this year up for election — the mayorship and Post 1 and 2 seats on the council, the last two held by Kenneth Agan and Nellie McCain, respectively.
Mayor Rob Ware has said he won’t seek re-election.
Cave Spring’s qualification period is scheduled from Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 at its City Hall, 10 Georgia Ave.
The qualifying fee is $45.
