Does Kirby have kin on T-Town police department?

Tuscaloosa Police Department. Since he left the Crimson Tide, there have been several arrests in T-Town. Has anyone checked to see if the Athens police has just hired a former Tuscaloosa officer? Just wondering.

Out & about

Troy Flutie, a wide receiver at Boston College and nephew of the Eagles’ most famous alum, Doug, was arrested on drunk driving charges. Flutie was kicked off the team. BC plays Georgia Tech in the season’s opening game in Dublin, Ireland . ... The word is that the Baylor University Board of Regents plans on firing President and Chancellor Ken Starr after more than a dozen allegation­s of sexual assault against Bear football players over the past six years. Starr was, of course, the persecutor and prosecutor against Bill Clinton on charges he was involved in a sexual scandal. Kind of ironic, yes? ... College recruiting guru Mel Kiper Jr. has compiled a list of 10 quarterbac­ks he feels could be considered to be in the top 10 in next year’s NFL draft. Several of the more familiar ones are senior Chad Kelly of Ole Miss, and underclass­men DeShaun Watson of Clemson and Brad Kaaya at Miami.

In this year’s ACC vs. Big Ten basketball challenge, the featured games will pit Duke against Michigan State and North Carolina against the Hoosiers of Indiana . ...

When Rory McIlroy won the Irish Open, he donated the $750,000 first prize to an Irish charity . ... John Daly played in his first Senior PGA event last week and finished tied for 15th. But in typical Daly fashion, he sank an eagle putt on the final hole and then signaled for a drink, (not water) . ... In a football game between members of the New York Police Department and the Fire Department of New York, the players exchanged fisticuffs as the game ended. It did raise money for charity . ... I guess Johnny Manziel has reached the bottom of the barrel.

He’s been barred by nightclubs in Las Vegas, supposedly because he’s been careless in taking drugs in public.

I was on a radio show last week in Atlanta and someone called to ask in my 30 years in sports journalism, who were the greatest athletes I covered? Evonne Goolagong and Ilie Nastase were the most graceful, Willie Mays was the greatest baseball player, Herschel Walker and Tim Tebow were the best college football players, Vince Carter and Michael Jordan were the greatest in basketball, while Rod Laver was the greatest tennis player. Billie Jean King. Chris Evert and Martina Navratilov­a were the greatest women, Pat Summitt was the best coach, and

Bobby Cremins was the nicest, most caring coach I’ve ever met.
