Valdosta wins 6A championsh­ip

ATLANTA — Josh Belton threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead No. 1 Valdosta to a 17-7 win over No. 4 Tucker in the Georgia High School Associatio­n Class AAAAAA championsh­ip Friday night at the Georgia Dome.

It was the 25th state championsh­ip for Valdosta, the winningest program in Georgia history, but its first since 1998. It came in the program’s first season under coach Alan Rodemaker.

Valdosta (14-1) led 17-0 at halftime on the strength of two Belton touchdown passes, a 35-yarder to Damarrias Morris and a 17-yarder to Joseph Ingram.

Davis Baldwin kicked a 44yard field goal as time expired in the half.

Belton completed 16 of 24 passes for 162 yards and rushed nine times for 53 yards. Ingram caught six passes for 82 yards and Morris had four catches for 55 yards.

34-27 victory over No. 4 Fellowship Christian in the Georgia High School Associatio­n’s Class A Private football championsh­ip Friday at the Georgia Dome.

Fellowship Christian failed to score on its possession in the second overtime. The game ended when quarterbac­k Jack Hardin’s fourth-down pass was incomplete.

It was the fourth state championsh­ip for Eagle’s Landing Christian (14-0) and extended the Chargers’ winning streak to 23 games.

Fellowship Christian (13-1) lost in its first trip to the championsh­ip game.

Fellowship Christian took the lead with 2:08 left in the game on Merrick Haigler’s 4-yard run, but Eagle’s Landing Christian sent the game to overtime on Alex Usry’s 30-yard field goal with six seconds remaining.

The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime. Fellowship’s Garrett Depew kicked a 30-yarder and Eagle’s Landing’s Usry kicked a 27-yarder. Eagle’s Landing was led by Trevor Gear, who rushed 14 times for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Quarterbac­k Brayden Rush completed 7 of 16 passes for 78 yards, but threw two intercepti­ons.

Tre Douglas caught six passes for 69 yards.
