Rome Board of Education members will have a second reading of the planned system calendars tonight, as well as hear an ELOST 4 update.

The board will caucus at 5 p.m. in the superintendent’s office and meet at 5:45 p.m. in the board room at the central office, 508 East Second St. Both meetings are open to the public.

The BOE will be looking at two school years’ worth of calendars, for the 2017-2018 year and the 2018-2019 year. Officials said parents and teachers appreciate the two years’ worth to make it easier to plan vacations.

For the 2017-2018 year, key dates are: the first day would be July 28; fall break would be Oct. 2 through 6; Thanksgiving break would be Nov. 20 through 24; winter break would be Dec. 19 through Jan. 1; spring break would be March 26 through 30; and the last day of school would be May 18.

For the 2018-2019 year, key dates are: the first day would be Aug. 3; fall break would be Oct. 1 through 5; Thanksgiving break would be Nov. 19 through 23; winter break would be Dec. 24 through Jan. 4; spring break would be March 25 through 29; and the last day of school would be May 24.

The proposed calendars have been posted on the system website for the public to review.

The board also will hear an update from superintendent Lou Byars about the education local option sales tax collections.

In other business, Greg Christian, principal of Rome Middle School, will present a slideshow about the school and the board will present award certificates to several students and groups during the public recognition portion of the meeting.

Board members also plan to choose delegates to attend the upcoming Georgia School Boards Association meeting in Savannah in the summer.
