Developer has plan for former Cobb school

-

MARIETTA — A developer plans to build several restaurants and high-end retail businesses on the old Mountain View Elementary School campus.

The Cobb Board of Education agreed to sell the 13.8-acre campus on Sandy Plains Road at Thursday’s board meeting for $1 million an acre.

Deputy Superintendent John Adams said the school district is building a new Mountain View Elementary School about a mile and a half from the original campus.

The new school is expected to open this summer in time for the new school year.

Marietta-based Brooks Chadwick Capital and developer Jeff Fuqua have the property under contract, and are planning a joint venture that involves a couple of chef-driven restaurants, some high-end retail and likely a grocery store to anchor the development, which is expected to be between 100,000 to 120,000 square feet in size.

The commercial retail zoning would have to be approved by the Cobb Board of Commissioners.

The plans are expected to come before the Cobb Planning Commission in September.

If all goes according to plan, the Marietta Daily Journal is told the developers would close by the end of the year with the development open by next summer.

“All in total it will probably be a $40 to $50 million project,” a source with knowledge of the project told the Marietta Daily Journal on Monday.
