Hearing set for factory
City Commission also to name SPLOST committee
The Rome City Commission is slated to decide tonight on a rezoning request to allow a waterproof paint factory at 2101 Rockmart Road.
The proposal has some opposition from residents in the nearby subdivisions of Saddle Mountain, Twickenham and Woodfin Estates. But it also netted unanimous support from the Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission.
“The biggest concerns were about what else could go in LI,” Assistant City Manager Patrick Eidson told the board during a caucus briefing earlier this month.
LI is the light industrial zoning property owner Rocky Calvert is seeking for 3-acre tract where he hopes to open Silicone Coating Solutions, Inc. The company expects to employ 15 to 30 people making a nontoxic sealer that would be sold in home improvement centers nationwide.
The tract is currently zoned for community commercial use, although it once housed a Zartic food-processing operation.
Also on the board’s agenda tonight is the appointment of four people to a new Citizens SPLOST Committee, which will also include appointments by the Floyd County and Cave Spring boards.
The group will review projects proposed for funding through a special purpose, local option sales tax. The current 1-cent SPLOST runs through March 31, 2019. Officials want to call a Nov. 7 vote on an extension to pay for a new package of projects.
Mayor Jamie Doss said during an April 10 discussion that he wants to see “a good cross-section of the community” on the committee. It prompted Commissioner Sundai Stevenson to ask how women were represented in the previous groups.
“I’d like to see some minority females on the list,” she said.
The board’s finance committee also is presenting a revised budget for 2016 that reflects changes in revenue and spending as required by state law.
Commissioners caucus at 5 p.m. and start their regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, 601 Broad St. Both sessions are open to the public.
