County to rule on Sweet Cocoon farm retreat tonight

Commissioners also will hold a public hearing on a controversial cluster home project on Callier Springs Road.

The Floyd County Commission is slated to decide tonight on a rezoning request for The Sweet Cocoon — a nonprofit that wants to open a farm retreat for families with seriously ill children on Cunningham Road.

Two other applications also are on the agenda: a controversial plan for a cluster home community on Callier Springs Road and a request to erect a telecommunications tower on acreage along Fosters Bend Road.

Commissioners will hold public hearings before they take action at their regular meeting set for 6 p.m.

A pre-meeting caucus, featuring a discussion about a voter satisfaction survey taken during the November 2016 balloting, starts at 4 p.m. Both meetings are on the second floor of the County Administration

Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave., and are open to the public.

Commission Chairwoman Rhonda Wallace also is scheduled to present her recommendations for appointment to a new Citizen SPLOST Committee. The county has six slots, Rome has four and Cave Spring has one.

Elected officials have already agreed that David Newby will chair the 12-member group charged with reviewing projects proposed for funding through an extension of the 1-cent special purpose, local option sales tax. A countywide vote on the recommended package will likely be called for Nov. 7.

City Manager Jamie McCord also has listed several pieces of budgeted equipment he’s asking permission to buy, and he’s recommending the board apply for additional paving funds from the state this year.
