Calhoun teacher is state finalist

CALHOUN — Calhoun City Schools’ Nathan Leatherwood has been chosen as one of the three finalists to be the 2017-18 Georgia PreK Teacher of the Year.

According to school officials, Leatherwood was surprised with a recent visit from Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning officials at an assembly at Calhoun Pre-K. Commissioner Amy Jacobs, Assistant Commissioner Susan Adams, Outreach Coordinator Meghan McNail, Nisserian Foundation Sponsor Stephanie Blank and Pre-K consultant Jae Boyd arrived at the school to present Leatherwood with the honor in front of the entire Pre-K and Junior Jacket Academy student body and staff.

“I love teaching pre-K because the kids are so eager to learn and our program is designed to best fit their needs and help them grow,” said Leatherwood. “I am thankful for the wonderful team of teachers I’m fortunate enough to work with. I am honored and humbled to be chosen as a finalist. I see the award as more a reflection of teamwork I have in my class with Ms. Valerie Jackson and with our whole Pre-K staff, than anything I have accomplished alone.”

Leatherwood is married to the former Anna Crowley, who is also a teacher with Calhoun City Schools. They have three children: Grady, Boland and Elizabeth.

Many participants wore green shirts and other items — an effort aimed at getting Loudermilk and other attendees to notice them outside of the event, said Casey Sharp, spokesperson for Indivisible Georgia’s Eleventh District.

“I found out about this event because I follow some Republican Facebook groups and their email lists, and this event was not posted on any of their events pages or their public calendars on their websites,” Sharp said. “You’d only know about this if you were on email lists and things like that for people who they think are donors.”

Peggy Harriman, a 63-year-old retired paralegal from Acworth, said she had attended the march due to her concerns about the American Health Care Act, the proposed healthcare plan that passed the House and is now heading to the U.S. Senate.

“Barry Loudermilk specifically voted for the Trump health care plan, which I am totally against.”
