CARTERSVILLE —Lidl, one of the world’s largest retailers, announced it will invest $100 million over the next five years in a new regional headquarters and distribution center in Cartersville.
The project is expected to bring 250 jobs, according to an announcement by Gov. Nathan Deal.
“About half of this is a cold storage distribution facility and the other half is dry goods, home goods, other things that people would find in their grocery stores,” Melinda Lemmon, executive director of the Cartersville Bartow County Dept. of Economic Development.
“I expect to see some dirt moving here very shortly,” Lemmon said.
Lidl sells fresh produce, meat, bakery items and a wide array of household products at low prices. It opened its first 10 stores in the U.S. on June 15 and plans to have up to 100 along the East Coast by next summer.
“Lidl’s commitment to locate in Georgia speaks
to our business-friendly climate and robust workforce … We value Lidl’s investment and share in the company’s vision for future growth,” Deal said.
The facility will be built on an 89.4 acre tract of land at the southwest corner of the intersection of Great Valley Parkway and Cass-Pine Log Road.
Bartow County is in the process of improving Great Valley Parkway and the access to the site will be off Great Valley Parkway from Cass-White Road.
Brendan Proctor, president and CEO of Lidl US, said Cartersville has “a vibrant workforce” and offers a central location for their distribution network.
“This facility will be an important part of Lidl’s efficient infrastructure,” he said.
The Cartersville facility will be the company’s fourth regional headquarters and distribution center. The other centers are in Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland.
Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini credited city/ county cooperation and their Joint Development Authority, along with assistance from the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 28 countries and a Lidl grocery store is the proposed anchor tenant at a new 5-acre retail center slated for Shorter Avenue next to the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation headquarters.
