Kevin Dwight Woodfin

Mr. Kevin Dwight Woodfin, age 46, of the Everett Springs Community, Calhoun, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at a local nursing home facility.

Mr. Woodfin was born on May 19, 1971 in Rome, Ga., son of Dwight T. Woodfin and the late Ilene Ransom Woodfin. After graduation, he joined the United States Army. Following his service, he returned home and pursued the trade of welding. Prior to medical retirement, Kevin worked as an independen­t contractor with several companies. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed competing with his dad in both sports. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and football, especially the Georgia Bulldogs. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ilene, and his grandmothe­r, Mary Alice Ransom.

Survivors include his son, Dakota Cole Woodfin, Calhoun; his father, Dwight T. Woodfin, Calhoun; his sister, Christy W. Carter, and her husband, Richard, Calhoun; a niece and nephew, Payton Carter and Randon Carter.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 30, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Woodfin and the Rev. Wendle Woodfin officiatin­g.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectful­ly requests memorial contributi­ons made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America Inc., Georgia Chapter, 505 Eighth Avenue, Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.

Mary Francis Beard

Ms. Mary Francis Beard, age 89, of Rome, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at a local hospice facility.

Ms. Beard was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on July 31, 1927, daughter of the late Arthur Thomas Kelly and the late Roma Kay Kelly. She was also preceded in death by two infant brothers. Ms. Beard worked for a number of years as a secretary, retiring from Sears and Roebuck in Atlanta and also from the Coosa Valley Regional Planning Commission. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was formerly a member of the Sacred Heart of St. Paul’s Guild in Atlanta.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Long, Adairsvill­e, and Janice Kelly, Lindale; a sister, Marie Neighbors and her husband, Calvin, Rome; eight grandchild­ren; thirteen great-grandchild­ren; five great-great grandchild­ren; nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 30, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Rafael Carballo. A reception for family and friends will follow the funeral Mass in the Church’s Parish Hall. A graveside service officiated

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Stowe Tatum, age 94, of Rome, GA, who passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, will be held this afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Cave Spring First Baptist Church with Rev. Jacob Wayne Kines officiatin­g. Interment will follow in the Cherokee Memory Gardens in Centre, AL.

Helen will lay in-state at the church of Friday where the family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.

Cave Spring will host its 32nd annual Independen­ce Day parade Tuesday at 9 a.m. in downtown Cave Spring. Those who would like to participat­e in the parade should line up between 8 and 9 a.m. All vehicles, floats with wheels and horses will line up on Perry Farm Road. All who wish to walk in the parade should assemble at Joe Hill’s Lawn Mower Shop at the old depot building on Alabama Street. Cave Spring United Methodist Church will be selling homemade ice cream. The Model Ruritan Club Barbecue and Brunswick stew sale on Tuesday at the Shannon Scout Hut, 40 Minshew Road, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Eat in or take it home. Barbecue will cost $7 for a plate or $3 for a sandwich. Brunswick stew will cost $28 per gallon, $8 per quart or $5 per pint. Friendly River Homemaker Club will sell desserts, including cakes, pies and other sweets.
