Stewart Bratcher, attorney and owner of The Bratcher Firm LLC, is the focus of today’s Small Business Snapshot.
What is the primary purpose of your business?
The primary purpose of my business is providing legal representation to individuals and small to medium sized businesses in the areas of DUI defense, criminal defense, personal injury and business law.
What is your business background?
I was born and raised in Silver Creek and graduated from Pepperell High School in 1999. I went on to Kennesaw State University and graduated in 2002 before receiving my law degree from Georgia State University in 2005. From 2005 until I returned to Rome in 2017 and opened the firm, I served as an Assistant District Attorney for the Cherokee Judicial Circuit (Bartow and Gordon Counties) where I prosecuted cases ranging in severity from traffic offenses to murder.
Why did you start this particular business?
I started the business in April 2017.
What makes your business unique?
My firm is unique because I have an amount of litigation and courtroom experience that is uncommon among attorneys in private practice. Over the past 11 years I was counsel in more than 100 jury trials and orally argued cases before the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Georgia Court of Appeals. In addition, having been a prosecutor for more than a decade I am able to see cases from both sides and use the experience I gained on “the other side” to the benefit of my clients.
What do you enjoy most about your chosen profession?
The thing I love most about my profession is being able to help people live better lives. Whether it is a business owner starting a new business or a person who has been accused of violating the law, I take pride in not only assisting with the legal issue but in helping to plan strategically for not just good legal outcomes, but good life outcomes as well.
What has been the most interesting challenge to overcome as a small business owner?
The most interesting challenge to being a small business owner is learning how to properly run a business. I have learned quickly that operating a law firm requires more than being a good attorney. It also requires a business plan, and learning how to navigate business matters such as taxes, calculating overhead and so forth, that was new to me having worked many years for the government.
