Lady Indians fall short in tough battle
Playing their third game in four days, Armuchee’s girls challenged Cherokee County under the basket Tuesday evening but were unable to get over the hump.
The Lady Indians lost 67-57 in the final game of the Lady Indian Thanksgiving Classic, ending the team’s streak of three wins in a row to start the 2017-18 season.
Senior guard Livia Skinner had a standout night for Armuchee as she scored 29 points and hit four 3-pointers. She scored 15 of the team’s 19 points in the final eight minutes, including every point of an 8-0 run that got the Lady Indians within five of Cherokee, 58-53.
But with less than three minutes left, the Lady Warriors forced Armuchee to foul down the stretch and pulled away.
Brandy-Ann Wacker finished with 12 points for the Lady Indians while Karson Fallin had eight. Mary Kate Wheeler added six and shot 4-of-6 from the line.
A second-period push gave Armuchee a 26-25 lead at the half, but a string of turnovers in the third put the Lady Indians back behind the in the score.
Down 23-14 with 5:45 left in the first half, the Lady Indians (3-1) managed to put together a 12-0 run that gave them a three-point cushion with 2:06 left. Cherokee (2-0) came out after the break and took advantage of a string of Armuchee miscues to roll up a 15-3 run and get ahead 42-30.
The Lady Warriors outscored Armuchee 23-12 in the third period.
Armuchee defeated Cartersville 39-34 on the first day of the Lady Indian Thanksgiving Classic on Monday. Fallin led the team with eight points, while Wacker and Skinner each had seven.
The Lady Indians will be back in action next Tuesday when they host Sonoraville.

Janson Slaughter scored 24 points, Brayden Dean added 11 and the Unity Christian boys’ team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 70-28 win over Hearts Academy at home on Monday.
The Lions (3-0) will break for Thanksgiving before returning to competition Nov. 30 to host Praise Academy.
