PLC students win big at video contest

The Phoenix Performance Learning Center, a non-traditional high school within Rome City Schools, was named as the first-place winner in the Georgia School Boards Association student video contest recently, winning a $1,000 prize.

According to a GSBA news release:

The school offers an option to students who may have problems with a traditional high school environment, whether that be for academic, social or medical reasons. It’s commonly referred to as the PLC.

This year’s video contest theme was “Student Achievement: What does it look like.” The contest pits schools from across the state against each other.

For the video, Czareah Lattimer was the lead student and Anastasia Teasley was the sponsoring faculty. Lattimer and Teasley, along with PLC Principal Jennifer Perkins, have been invited to an awards luncheon at the GSBA and Georgia School Superintendents Association annual conference in Atlanta Dec. 1.

The GSBA Awards committee, who judged the videos on how well they addressed the topic, as well as the quality of the production and the creativity of the video, did the judging. The videos were all one minute or less. No professional assistance was provided to produce the video. The format of the video was left up to the students (commercial, news broadcast, music video, etc.) There were 44 videos submitted for the contest. The number of submissions were almost double last year’s entries.

The top three videos and the two honorable mention videos, as determined by the judges, will be shown at various times during the 2017 GSBA / GSSA Annual Conference.
