John Robert Forrester

John Robert “Johnny” Forrester, age 93, of Rome, passed away on November 25, 2017.

Johnny was born on April 19, 1924, in Lindale, Ga., son of the late Thad Picket Forrester and the late Ruby Fricks Forrester. He graduated with the class of 1941 from Rome High School and married Marguerite Burkhalter in 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in May 1943 and was honorably discharged in February 1946, having served in France and Germany. Returning to Lindale, he worked for West Point Pepperell and retired with over 50 years service at Lindale Manufactur­ing. Johnny was a member of McClainSea­lock American Legion Post #136 in Lindale, serving as Commander several times.

In 1976, Johnny and Marguerite moved from Maple Road to a small farm in Little Texas Valley to be near their daughter, Ellen Ann, so they could enjoy more time with their grandchild­ren, Allison and Laurie. Johnny enjoyed gardening and the quiet surroundin­gs of the farm that fronted Lavender Mountain. He lived there until moving to Riverwood Senior Living in 2011. Johnny was an active member of Mt. Berry United Methodist Church and made many friends there.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite, in 1988; his only sibling, Evelyn Forrester Toole; and a special aunt, Ludie Fricks Mathis. He is survived by his daughter, Ellen, and her husband, William (Chip) Limbrick, Armuchee; granddaugh­ters Allison Howard, Rome, and Laurie Thompson, and her husband, Wyatt, (Pete) Thompson, Raleigh, N.C.; greatgrand­children include Caroline Barkley, Atlanta, and Folden and Wheeler Thompson, Raleigh, N.C.

The family would like to express gratitude to Riverwood Senior Living for their profession­al and compassion­ate care. Johnny enjoyed playing bingo, the weekly shopping trips, and sitting in his recliner to read the morning paper while watching birds at the feeder beside his window.

Receiving of friends in Johnny’s memory will be at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on December 22, 2017 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The extended date will allow outof-state family to attend. Interment will be at Floyd Memory Gardens at a later date.

Mr. Joseph Phillip Rhoades, age 65, of Rome, passed away Monday, November 27, 2017, at a local hospital.

James Turner Wright

Mr. James Turner “J.T.” Wright, age 87, of Rome, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017, in a local assisted living facility.

Mr. Wright was born in Floyd County on September 2, 1930, son of the late Albert Wright and the late Pearly Estelle Venable Wright. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a retired employee of Berry College, having worked in the maintenanc­e department for over 24 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Amelia Dobbs Wright; by a brother, Evans R. Wright; and by two daughters, Barbara Jean “B.J.” Carlstrom and Wanda Faye Bangs.

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda LuAllen, Rome; a son, Lamar Wright, Seminole, Fla.; a brother, Charles Wright, Orlando, Fla.; three grandchild­ren, Chance Carlstrom, Kevin LuAllen, and Jennifer Bangs; one greatgrand­daughter, Skyla LuAllen; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2017, in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Scott Lambert will officiate. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence of a grandson at 224 Wilshire Road #9, Rome.

Pallbearer­s serving are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and include Chance Carlstrom, Dusty Jones, Richard Wright, Ray Murphy, Ronald Lynch, and Kevin LuAllen.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Riverwood Assisted Living and Homestead Hospice for their care given to Mr. Wright.

Dr. Barbara Vivian Wyatt, age 96, of Rome, passed away at her residence Tuesday, November 28, 2017.

Mr. James Herring, age 71, of Rome, passed away Monday morning at Cedar Hill Nursing Home in Cedartown, Ga.

Graveside services for Mr. James Herring will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Dr. Billy Raybern officiatin­g. The American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard will be conducting military rites.

Mr. Grover Cleveland Haggard Jr., age 78, of the Shannon Community, passed away Sunday morning, November 26, 2017, at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Sand Mountain, Rising Fawn, Georgia, Mr. Haggard was born April 22, 1939, son of the late Grover Cleveland Haggard Sr. and Nettie Crocker Haggard.

He was a resident of Rome most of his life. At the age of 17, he began his career as an appliance repairman with Floyd Outlaw Appliance Service, working there for 25 years before opening his own business. Mr. Haggard was also well known as a heating and air conditioni­ng mechanic.

He was a member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church. He loved fishing, working in the yard, spending time with his family, and trips to Harrah’s and Pearl River.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Kell Haggard; two sons, Jimmy and Jerry Haggard; a sister, Vera Turner; and two brothers, Floyd and Lewis Haggard.

Surviving Mr. Haggard are two daughters and a son-in-law, Penny Clifton and Pam and James Hinkley; son, David Haggard, and his fiancée, Tina Roberson; and son, Grover Anthony “Tony” Haggard, all of Rome; fifteen grandchild­ren; nineteen great-grandchild­ren; a sister, Dorothy Haggard; along with nephews, Ron Haggard, Steve (Donna) Bradshaw, Mike Bradshaw; niece, Sherry Fugate; and a nephew and niece, Bobby and Hilda Pitts Turner, of Freeport, Florida, also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Avenue, with the Reverend Ken Hinkley officiatin­g. Interment will follow in the Lindale Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Retired Detective Sergeant William Lavonne Ward, age 68, of Rome, Georgia, and formerly of Cedartown, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2017.

He was born on February 10, 1949 in Cedartown, the son of the late William Wilber Ward and the late Dorothy Carter Ward. He was a graduate of Cedartown High School and a United States veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam. Following his military career, Lavonne graduated college and started a long and successful career with the Rome Police Department.

During this time, he served the people of Rome in many areas where he was more than willing to serve and protect. He attained the rank of Detective and retired following thirty five years of dedicated service to the citizens of Floyd County.

Lavonne had also started the Law Enforcemen­t Explorers of Floyd County and served as Chaplain for the Rome P.D. for many years. He was a member of the FOP Lodge in Floyd County. He was an ordained minister and pastored two churches, Harmony Baptist Church and Victory Baptist Church, both in Rome. He was a member of the Rolling Hills Baptist Church.

Lavonne Ward is survived by his loving wife, Peggy S. Ward; his son, Jeremy Ward, and Christina ; his daughter, Tina Ward Gentry, and Andy; brothers, Danny H. Ward and Kim D. Ward; sisters, Dawn Fortune, Christie Ward, and Caitlin Ward; his grandchild­ren, Joshua, Mikayla, Ian, and Kerigan. A number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles also survive.

The family of Lavonne Ward will receive friends on Wednesday evening, November 29, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home. The funeral service for Retired Detective Sergeant William Lavonne Ward will be conducted on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at noon from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Brown officiatin­g. The Rome-Floyd County Law Enforcemen­t Honors Detail will be standing watch during both the visitation and the funeral service. Interment will follow in the Northview Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the BrewsterCl­eveland Post 86 Honor Guard.
